Multidisciplinary Internships on Applied Marine Conservation: Science, Policy & Media

Remote – Online Internships

During the COVID-19 outbreak, if you are unable to travel, you can still gain first-hand experience in applied marine conservation. Students, graduates and young professionals can gain scientific, policy or communication experience working with the on-site research team of Archipelagos

On-site – internships in the Aegean

The island of Lipsi, Greece has remained COVID-free, allowing the Archipelagos team to continue our vital conservation work. Despite the ongoing lockdown, a limited number of interns can still join us on-sitewith all necessary safety measures being respected. Our interns gain field work experience, data collection skills, a better understanding on issues related to applied marine conservation and much more. 
Researchers, students and graduates hoping to gain more experience outside of the COVID lockdown can join one of the various teams depending on your unique interests. Internships take place on Lipsi island and on board Archipelagos’ 3 research vessels. Read more HERE

Marine Ecology Research & Conservation Projects
  • Monitoring the spread of invasive species
  • Monitoring fish biodiversity and abundance via Remote Underwater Videos and visual census
  • Monitoring the health of Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows
  • Experimental replanting of seagrass meadows
  • Assessment of Blue Carbon in seagrass meadows
  • Monitoring artificial reef recolonisation

Applied GIS & Remote Sensing Projects
  • Assessment of the distribution of the Mediterranean endemic Posidonia seagrass meadows with a variation of methodologies, ranging from in-situ sampling with kayak or boat-based sonars up to remote sensing or modelling with satellite or aerial imagery.
  • Habitat suitability models for cetaceans, invasive species and marine debris
  • Mapping the risk of maritime accidents.

Marine Mammals Research & Conservation Projects
  • Monitoring populations of dolphins, whales and monk seals in the Aegean Sea & assessment of anthropogenic threats (e.g. fisheries, sound pollution)
  • Photo identification, bioacoustics and map creation using GIS
  • Population monitoring of cetaceans around Lipsi Island using drones
  • Monitoring of Mediterranean monk seals and turtles

Environmental Policy 

Research and legal analysis in fields including:

  • EU fisheries legislation and Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fisheries.
  • Promoting the enforcement of existing EU and international legislation for the protection of protected habitats (eg. Seagrass meadows and coralligenous reefs).
  • Combating environmental crimes, pollution incidents and the destruction of natural habitats and wildlife.
