Manufacturing ultrasound-sensitive drug carriers for targeted
neuronal circuit manipulation in the Neurotechnology group

Project: The Neurotechnology lab (Prof. Mehmet Faith Yanik) focuses on several promising technologies aimed towards understanding brain function and developing therapies for brain diseases, including: development of next-generation flexible electrodes, high resolution neuronal circuit connectivity mapping, and ultrasound-based target drug delivery. We are seeking the help of a talented and motivated young scientist to aide in these projects, particularly the production of critical ultrasound sensitive drug carriers that are currently being used for circuit-specific manipulation of pathological brain circuits involved in brain disorders.

Work description: We are seeking a student at bachelor’s or master’s level for manufacturing novel ultrasound-based drug carriers. If the student has additional time, she/he may also aide in the fabrication of flexible electrodes, processing of neuronal tissue, and help with general tasks in the lab. The student should be motivated and curious about these topics, as his/her contributions will be critical to several projects. Intellectual contributions towards advancing these projects are welcomed.


  • Background in molecular biology/neuroscience OR chemistry/chemical engineering, is strongly preferred;
  • Previous lab work, particularly wet lab skills, is preferable.
  • Meticulous and reliable working habit.

Percentage, hours, and duration: Up to 35% / 15hrs per week employment (hourly rates) for at least 6 months with option for up to 1 year. Working hours are flexible but depending on experimental demand and timing.

Optional: LTK-1 animal training course or a FELASA-accredited equivalent. It would also allow the student to learn basic in vivo rodent surgery skills for stereotaxic injections and/or conducting behavioral experiments. If the student works with us longer (i.e. up to 1 year), we can also discuss for the student to take the LTK course.

Master thesis project in cellular aging

Project title: Optimising a biosensor of cellular age

Project background: Ageing is commonly defined as the time-dependent deterioration in organismal fitness. However, variability in ageing kinetics has led to the hypothesis that each cell type possesses its own ageing trajectory. We currently develop novel ageing biosensors to characterise the progression of cellular age across different murine cell types and tissues. The aim of the project is to modify the existing sensors allowing for real-time analysis of cellular age in diverse cell types.

• Optimize the biosensor to make it more dynamic.
• Express the new construct in cells.
• Assess the dynamics of the new sensor using fixed and live-cell imaging.
• Test the functionality of the sensor using artificially and physiologically aged cells.

Techniques and tasks to be performed
• Cloning of new construct
• Cell culture of mammalian cell lines
• Confocal imaging
• Live-cell imaging
• Immunohistochemistry
• Data analysis (some of it in R studio)
• Lab book maintenance and occasional lab meeting presentations

Project details
Duration: minimum 6 months, preferably full-time
Starting date: As soon as possible

• Must have bachelor’s degree, preferably with molecular, cellular or
biochemical background
• At least 1 wet-lab internship

Hilfsassistierende für die Durchführung einer Online-Prüfung am 12.8.2022

Für die Durchführung und Beaufsichtigung einer Online-Prüfung in Organischer Chemie suche ich studentische Hilfskräfte.

Die Prüfung Organische Chemie I & II findet am Freitag, den 12. August 2022 von 9:30 – 12:00 Uhr statt.

Voraussetzungen: Sie haben eine CH-Arbeitsbewilligung, sind als BSc- oder MSc-Student:in an der ETH oder der Uni Zürich immatrikuliert (nicht notwendigerweise im Fach Chemie) und überzeugen als Mitarbeiter:in durch Redlichkeit und Zuverlässigkeit.

Ihre Aufgabe erledigen Sie in einem Team. Sie besteht in der Beaufsichtigung und technischen Unterstützung einer grossen Gruppe von Studierenden bei der Online-Prüfung. Es ist hilfreich, wenn Sie mit Moodle vertraut sind, aber spezielle chemische oder IT-Kenntnisse sind nicht erfordert.

Falls Sie zu ersten Mal eine Moodle-basierte Online-Prüfung betreuen, nehmen Sie nach Möglichkeit im Vorfeld der Prüfung an einer kurzen Online-Schulung durch die Abteilung Lehrentwicklung und -technologie (LET) der ETH teil.

Bezahlt werden 5 h (inkl. Schulung und Vorbereitungsarbeiten) zum Tarif von rund 28 CHF pro Stunde.

Study Places on Campus

Now that the semester is over we can enjoy the summer break! Oh wait we still have exams in August/September. The following guide will hopefully make your study planning less tedious so that you can focus 100% on your studies instead of finding the right place.

I. ETH libraries (all ETH libraries not listed here, instead the larger and biology student relevant ones are)

Zentrum/Central campus

  • InfoCenter, Rämistrasse 101 HG H 30.1, (150 individual study places and 15 research stations, Monday – Friday 9:00 – 22:00 and Saturday – Sunday 9:00 – 17:00). Usually rather full but so far I have never managed to not find at least one spot even during busy semester times. As a nice bonus I find this library very bright and well lit keeping me awake during late hours.


  • Chemistry, Biology and Pharmacy Information centre (200 workplaces, Monday – Friday 8:00 – 20:00) Like most ETHZ libraries tends to be rather full at times but they have a useful indicator online where one can see how occupied the library is. Additionally, since this is the topic relevant library for biology students you can locate books relevant to your study topic here. Hint: If you print out your lab protocols or lecture notes you can request for plastic spiral binders and covers for free from the front desk by showing your D-BIOL student ID.

III. Lab office spaces (mainly for Master students)

In the masters you will perform rotations in labs, and usually you are given an office space to update your lab book/do data analysis. However, if you ask your lab you are usually allowed to study coursework at this office space after lab time is completed. Just be sure to ask your lab beforehand as usually students are not allowed to be in the lab space (and office) alone!

IV. External libraries and study areas

A learning centre with 24 h access for ETH students and a possibility to book a spot online. Located around 15 min from both ETH campuses. Also includes an indicator online showing centre occupancy.

The main library of UZH and Zürich with multiple floors and many study places in the old town of Zürich. Usually quite busy during semester study breaks but I have have always managed to find at least one spot.
